The main components of basalt stones are sodium silicate aluminate or calcium silicate aluminate, with a silicon dioxide content of approximately 45% -52%, and high levels of iron oxide and magnesium oxide. It is a fine-grained and dense black rock. Due to the generation of a large number of pores during eruption, sometimes large pores resembling almond shaped structures, are often filled with other minerals in the middle later on. Basalt magma has low viscosity, is easy to flow, and forms a large covering layer, often forming vast lava terraces, so it is widely distributed. The color of basalt is commonly black, dark brown, or dark green. Due to its dense texture, its specific gravity is heavier than that of ordinary granite, limestone, sandstone, and shale. But there are also some basalts that have a lot of pores, which reduces their weight and can even float in water. Therefore, this porous lightweight basalt is called "pumice". Unweathered basalt is a dense rock of black or dark green color. Due to its formation of hexagonal crystal joints after condensation, it forms hexagonal columns after weathering. Severe weathering can lead to the formation of yellow brown basalt. If further leached by rainwater, silica can be removed to form bauxite ore. Some basalt pores are also filled with minerals such as copper, cobalt, and sulfur. Due to its low viscosity after melting and hard and dense solidification, basalt can be used as a raw material for casting stones.
